STREPTOCOCCUS V.S. VIRUS IN COMMON COLD AND INFLUENZA [45R5] Notwithstanding the common presence of virus in acute respiratory infections, Dr. Rosenow noted the likewise common association of organisms of the pneumococcus-streptococcus group with more serious manifestations and death in these diseases. Rosenow asserted that the streptococci are not secondary invaders, but rather that "The data obtained indicate that the streptococci isolated in this study had etiologic relationship to seasonal epidemic respiratory infections, including influenza, the common cold, influenzal bronchopneumonia and so-called virus pneumonia." [45R5] The characterization of streptococcus and virus as two phases of a single organism is discussed elsewhere (e.g. 34R3; 38R2; 44R3; 53R2).[Go to ROSENOW Bibliography]
