AUTOSERUM FOR OPIUM ADDICTION, FROM ARTIFICIAL BLISTER - 37A11
In 1937 Woo [37A11] reported on 1000 cases of opium addiction,
treated over a period of 4 months with subcutaneous auto-serum
injections. The serum is taken from an artificially produced
blister (induced by application of Cantharides plaster) and
immediately injected subcutaneously, usually in the arm, after it
has been cleaned with 1 oz. of picric acid. More than 1/3 of the
total 1000 patients were reported as having been completely cured
or taking 90% less opium; more than 3/4 of the total 1000
patients were reported as taking 50% less opium or better. Of
the remainder, it is noted: "We feel certain that many more have
been completely cured after treatment but have not returned to
report themselves. ... Every case reported which was not
completely freed from the habit, smoked much less than
formerly...."
For those regarded as cures, the average size and number of
injections was about 2.6 cc per injection over a course of seven
injections.
Woo reported that "we find that whole blood taken from the vein
and reinjected into the patient does not give the best result..."
Woo's results of 1000 cases:
161 completely cured
179 taking 90% less opium
187 taking 75% less opium
237 taking 50% less opium
236 little or no improvement, or did not return
