AUTOHEMOTHERAPY EXPLAINED AS DESENSITIZATION - 33B10
In a follow-up article to 32A1, Burgess 1933 [33B10], p. 339.
offered:
"In the present state of our knowledge it would be unwise to be
dogmatic concerning the interpretation of skin-reactions, but
this work tends to suggest that the blood in these cases contains
antigens, and that the injection of the patient's blood or serum
leads to desensitization." Burgess cites a study in which 15
patients had given positive skin reactions before treatment.
Eleven of these were benefitted by autohemotherapy, and "after
treatment and relief negative reactions were obtained. Those
cases which were not relieved continued to give positive
reactions."
Burgess, 1933 [33B10], 336, "It was found that only 16% of
normal controls gave positive reactions to their proteoses, while
67% of those suffering from the skin diseases under consideration
[primarily urticaria, psoriasis and eczema] gave positive
reactions."
AUTOHEMOTHERAPY: PSORIASIS OF PARTICULAR INTEREST - 33B10
Burgess, 1933 [33B10], 337, notes that the cases of psoriasis
are of particular interest: "all the acute cases gave positive
skin-reactions, 3 out of 5 cases of sub-acute psoriasis gave
positive reactions, while 3 out of 4 cases of chronic psoriasis
gave negative reactions to their own proteoses. ... the best
results of treatment with autohemotherapy were obtained in acute
cases, and the greatest number of failures were among the chronic
cases."
AUTOHEMO FOR VARICOSE DERMATITIS - 33B10
Burgess 1933 [33B10], "Consistently good results were obtained
in cases of varicose dermatitis of the leg in which a generalized
sensitization eruption had occurred; all the cases treated were
known to be cured with the exception of three who ceased to
attend."
