AUTOHEMIC SERUM: "CURE FOR LAZINESS, UGLINESS, FRIGITIDY" 23E1
"'Autohemic Serum', A Cure for Laziness, Ugliness, Frigidity
and Many Other Things", so read the title of an item in JAMA 74
(July 14, 1920, p. 477-8), referring to "charlatan" Dr. L. D.
Rogers of Chicago and his "auto-hemic" serum. [see 23E1]
"What is auto-hemic therapy? ... According to a very lurid
poster it is described as 'The Missing Link in Medicine',
possibly referring to the ease with which one may make monkeys
out of certain physicians. More specifically, although still
vaguely, we learn: 'It consists of giving the patient a solution
made by attenuating, hemolyzing, incubating and potentizing a few
drops of his or her own blood. ..."
Dr. Rogers' first publisher was "Ideal Life Extension Press",
which name contains a concept still capable today of selling
millions of books and magazines.
