ROLE OF STREPTOCOCCI IN PHEUMONIA 19R5, p. 397 Rosenow and Sturdivant identified a "somewhat peculiar green- producing streptococcus or diplostreptococcus .... ...study of the sputum and other material [from patients during epidemic of influenza and accompanying pneumonia] shows that of all the bacteria isolated, the somewhat peculiar green producing streptococcus is the most important. This organism is present in large numbers at the very outset of symptoms of influenza and of the accompanying pneumonia; it is commonly present after death." The authors reported that the mortality rate in a group inoculated three times with mixed vaccine which included this streptococcus was 1/5 that of uninoculated persons.[Go to ROSENOW Bibliography]
