Beginning in 1891, Gilbert of Geneva [1894H1] treated pleuritic
patients with "hypodermic injections of their own exudate ... the
method was based on researches made in 1890 and 1891 by Debove
and R‚mond on the presence of tuberculin in the peritoneal
exudate of tuberculosis subjects." [Austin, 11E2].
Austin [11E2]: "The treatment ... is dangerous neither during or
after its application .... [Gilbert] does not hesitate to state
that he looks upon the treatment as efficacious in the majority
of cases, and without any risk whatever."
